Changes in Climate Extremes and Their Effect on Maize (Zea mays L.) Suitability Over Southern Africa

چکیده
Southern Africa has been identified as one of the hotspot areas climate extremes increasing, at same time many communities in region are dependent on rain-fed agriculture, which is vulnerable to these rainfall and temperature extremes. The aim this study understand changes extreme indices during agricultural season under change how that affect modeling maize suitability Africa. We analyze its (consecutive dry days, heavy rain events prolonged events), (hot night temperatures, hot day temperatures frequency very days) from past (1986–2014) future (2036–2064) integrate into a model. Temperature projected increase both duration intensity, particularly eastern parts region. Also, consecutive days over larger season, while will be less sums, heavier intensity duration. Including improves efficiency model shows more severe than using season-long climatic variables. conclude complicate livelihood-climate nexus future, therefore, set comprehensive adaptation options for sector needed. These include use heat, drought high-intensity tolerant varieties, irrigation and/or soil water conservation techniques, some cases switching other crops.

Maize (Zea mays L.).
Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...
متن کاملEffect of Climate Change on Maize (Zea mays) Production and Food Security in Swaziland
Climate variability has been and continues to be, the principal source of fluctuations in global food production in countries of the developing world and is of serious concern in the Kingdom of Swaziland. The mean annual rainfall is considerably low in most parts of the country and temporal variability is quite high. In some places, as much as 60% of the annual total rainfall is recorded in jus...
متن کاملEffects of aluminum toxicity on maize (Zea mays L.) seedlings
Aluminum toxicity is one of the most deleterious factors for plant growth in acidic soils because over 50% of the world’s potentially arable lands are acidic. In recent years, considerable research has been conducted to understand the mechanisms of Al toxicity and tolerance in plants. This paper reviews the effects of different concentration of Al on plant shoot, root physiological parameters s...
متن کاملCOMBINING ABILITY AND HETEROSIS IN MAIZE (Zea mays L.)
A line × tester analysis was conducted in maize involving 12 lines and 3 testers for grain yield and its components to determine the heterosis as well as general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects. Highly significant genotypic differences were observed indicated wide range of variability present among the genotypes. GCA and SCA variance for yield per plant numb...
متن کاملEpistasis in Maize (zea Mays
ISHER (1918) provided a framework for the characterization of genotypic variance whereby he partitioned it into three components: ( 1 ) a portion associated with the average effects of genes, (2) a portion associated with dominance effects (allelic interactions) of genes, and (3) a portion associated with epistatic effects (nonallelic interactions) of genes. A logical method for the further sub...
